Well, well, well.
Remember last week, when I was feeling so good about where my training was headed? Little did I know, covid was lurking about in my body even as I typed. I made it FOUR YEARS, people, and our little jaunt to NYC either did me in or hastened my downfall if the virus was already lurking. Sigh! I was so surprised when the test popped up positive, I took a second one, thinking the first one had to be in error!
BUT – I did make it four years. And this bout is so mild that it’s hard to complain. I was definitely overdue – and on the bright side, I now have refreshed immunity coming into the new year, like a super-powerful booster. This has, however, put me off my training game for a few days – and probably will this week too, to some degree.
Before I tested positive, however (in the days prior I’d had a few sniffles and a bit of congestion here and there, and a sore throat that came and went without incident), I did get in a few good days of training. In fact, I was on pace for a solid A for the week! In fact, maybe I still give myself the A for stopping training and not being stupid once I tested positive.
No matter. Onward and upward in the new year! Here’s where we’re going this week.
Monday: As I am now out of isolation and was feeling well enough to get up and go (at a more measured pace), we went on our annual New Year’s Day hike to Roosevelt Island this morning and had a grand old time. Over the years we’ve had to go earlier and earlier in order to snag a parking space – others have become wise to our game!
Tuesday: If I continue to improve, I’ll try a 30-minute easy ride on the trainer in the hopes that Zwift is still handing out New Year’s party hats. (It’s a real thing!)
Wednesday: I have a run on the schedule, but I’ll take a 30-minute walk with maybe a few minutes of test running just to see how my heart rate does. (It’s been rather high as I fight this thing, which I understand is not unusual!)
Thursday: Another easy ride of 30-45 minutes.
Friday: By Friday I will be out of my 10-day recovery period, and a swim is on the docket. If all goes to plan I’ll try to get just a little 30-minute splash-around in.
Saturday: If all goes to plan, maybe I can do an hour easy on the bike.
Sunday: I have a 1:10 long run on the schedule for this week, and I am not going to get all excited and think I’ll be up for it, but it makes an excellent goal! I do love a long run, as you know.
Happy new year, friends!! May 2024 be the best one yet.
