Well, here we are, arriving squarely into the week before Christmas. It’s nuts, isn’t it, how quickly this month has flown by? I’ve worked hard to savor every moment and try not to stress, but to be honest with you, my results are mixed. Still, there’s something to be said for trying, right? Just like in races – or, heck, in training – we can’t always control the outcome, but we can control our responses.
Before we move on to this week’s training schedule, a look back at last week. All told, I think I did pretty well with my consistency, though there were a few curveballs thrown my way. Sure, my company’s annual meeting threw an expected curveball (and thus my swim and rowing on Friday did not happen, BUT a wonderful early-morning hike with a friend DID happen, so I consider it a net win!), but what I did not expect was to wake up last Wednesday with a raging sore throat. It went away by midday, but it scared me a bit as I’m not all that prone to sore throats, so I slept in to try to will it away. Evidently, that rest helped. So I don’t feel sorry for it.
All told, I give myself an A-. Tis the season, after all. 😉
Now, on with this week, which I see is an assessment week. Whee!
Monday: The week begins, as ever, with a swim, in this case an hourlong dunk in the pool. The workout is your friend and mine the ladder, which may not be some swimmers’ cup of tea but I honestly don’t mind. It’s good for mental toughness, at the very least. That evening I also have a date at the Row House, where I’ll be partaking of a Strength workout for 45 minutes.
Tuesday: Now, Tuesday brings with it an FTP test on the bike, which I cannot really say I’m all that excited about. If I have an opportunity to ride with my dad, I may move this to Thursday or to another time altogether, as the FTP test isn’t conducive to conversation. 😉 But I will get it done.
Wednesday: Next up: A 5K running time trial! I’ll probably do this on the treadmill at the gym to be honest, as it will help me set my pace somewhat.
Thursday: An hourlong easy bike ride is on the docket for Thursday, which will be much appreciated after all those time trials, and then also a Signature workout at Row House after work.
Friday: Lest the pool feel left out in the proceedings, Friday brings a time trial there as well, my latest 400/200 assessment. I feel a little apprehensive about this, as I haven’t really been super-faithful with my swimming over the past couple of months, but I’ll just do my best and see what happens.
Saturday: Now, I’m just going to say here and now that from Christmas Eve Eve on through Christmas itself, the workout schedule may get a little funky. But honestly, and I say this with all love and respect: Who cares?! It’s Christmas, my friends. Embrace the weekend and have fun! … That said, I have a 1:15 threshold and hold bike workout on the schedule, as well, as a 20-minute brick run. 🙂
Sunday: Christmas Eve brings with it a 50-minute run workout of marathon repeats. Sounds like fun to me!
Happy holidays, my friends!
